The original Ticket to Ride won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award in 2004 and has gone on to sell millions of copies and spawn plenty of variants and new map expansions. Essentially a card expansion for the original Ticket to Ride board game, Ticket to Ride: USA 1910 offers so much more punch than it’s diminutive package suggests.
Firstly, it offers a large format reprint of the original card deck, which many found very fiddly. Four of the destination tickets have been altered slightly, with their values being downgraded to give the game more balance. Also included are four destination tickets from the previously out-of-print Essen promo “Mystery Train” expansion.
Ticket to Ride: USA 1910 also offers three mini expansions that can vastly alter the way you will approach the game:
“1910” is played using only tickets with the 1910 logo on them and the new Globetrotter bonus card replaces the Longest Route bonus card – this gives a bonus for most completed tickets.
The “Mega Game” involves both bonus cards in play, more tickets in play and more tickets available during play.
With the “Big Cities” variant, you’ll only use destination tickets with the Big Cities logo – these Big Cities are Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Seattle. This can lead to major congestion around these cities as players vie to complete their routes.
While this expansion doesn’t offer anything ground-breaking, it gives welcome variation and builds upon the fun factor and accessibility of one of the most popular board games of a generation – and that’s where its simple beauty lies.
