Dust off your Tactical Squads, your Rhinos and your box Dreadnoughts! It's time for some retro action in our Warhammer 40,000 3rd edition weekender!
First and foremost it is important to note you must have a working knowledge of the rules of 3rd edition 40k as represented in what is commonly known as "The Big Black Book" (https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/.../Warhammer_40,000_3rd...)
This rulebook contains army lists for all the armies that existed in 40k at the time and players are permitted to create their 1250pt armies using these lists or one drawn from a subsequent 3rd edition publication. It really isn't a big deal as long as mechanically it works in 3rd edition!
"Can I use Primaris?" will be one of the most common questions from players that might wish to join in that have either joined the hobby after the advent of Primaris marines and have only them to draw on from their collection, or have in the many years since disbanded their former Space Marines armies. The short answer is yes, but obviously organised into appropriate 3rd edition Space Marine units (such as a "Tactical Squad" being represented by a Sergeant, 7 Intercessors, a Hellblaster and a Desolation Marine). An Impulsor for a Rhino, a Redemptor for a regular Dreadnought etc. As a small note armies containing Primaris proxies will not be eligible for the best painted army award.
-However-
Space Marine players are encouraged to try and bring forth 1250pts of First-Born Space Marines where possible. Most kits are still available, such as the Tactical Squad, the Devastator Squad and vehicles. Some have unfortunately disappeared from production with Games Workshop, such as the regular Assault Squad, however we recommend looking into the current Horus Heresy range for First-Born options also. Of course, there's always good ol' fashioned second hand proper retro figures to renovate and give a new lease of life to.
The only exception to permitted lists are forces compiled from unofficial / homebrew lists, and all forces must be compiled from lists at some point* published by Games Workshop during the tenure of Warhammer 40,000 3rd edition. Proxying armies with other lists (where appropriately themed!) is permitted however, for example Adeptus Mechanicus players are welcome to proxy their army as Imperial Guard where feasible, Adeptus Custodes players may look to the Dark Angels Deathwing for an appropriate proxy list, etc.
*Yes, this means you could be playing with a list from one version of a faction's codex and your opponent could be using the other! It doesn't matter. You'll work it out.
The weekend will consist of 5 narrative games, at 1250pts.
This is not a tournament.
This is not a competitive event.
We'll simply be running a bigger, better version of our regular 3rd edition games days with more of a narrative aspect, a Saturday night social and more freebies and prizing!
There will be three factions to choose from:
Imperial Alliance
Space Marines (any kind), Sisters of Battle, Imperial Guard, Eldar, Tau, any other Imperial forces.
Forces of Chaos
Chaos Space Marines, Lost and the Damned, any other Chaotic roster etc.
The Unaligned
Dark Eldar, Orks, Necrons, Tyranids.
Simply select your faction upon purchasing your ticket. This is purely to track for narrative purposes to see which faction "wins" over the fate of the galaxy over the course of the weekend! Players are permitted to select a different faction with their chosen army if they wish (for instance, a Space Marine army in The Unaligned) but must have a very good narrative reason for doing so and WILL be grilled about this at the event!!
Battle Honours
After each round, players select one of their units to be given a Battle Honour as per page 163 of the Warhammer 40,000 third edition rulebook. This is chosen outright and not rolled for. It will remain with the unit for the remainder of the event.
Terrain and MissionsThe event will use a variety of missions from the Warhammer 40,000 third edition rulebook and many of the terrain effect rules specified therein also. Exact missions and maps will be revealed at the event - so prepare for anything!
Prizes
Player's Player Award
Best Painted Army
Shiny Medallions for the "Winning" faction
Ah heck, Shiny Medallions for all
Best Paint Job Rescue(All players are welcome to enter the "Paint Job Rescue" painting competition! This is intended for those eBay / car boot / garage find model refurbishments that are part of the charm of retro wargaming. This is a separate competition and does not have to be part of the army a player is using for the event. Players must bring a framed 4x6 photo of the model as it was prior to being stripped / reprimed and painted so that they can be compared! The award will be voted on by all in attendance.)
Best Army Background
(All players are asked to write a simple 200 word background story for their army or the characters within it. (You don't have to if you really don't want, but even a badly written entry will be better than none!) Please bring this on a separate print out if you would like to enter so that people can vote on it. Please do not use chat GPT. I mean, come on.)
There will be a Saturday evening social meal arranged so please purchase your ticket with an email address you actually use!
And finally...
It doesn't matter.
Please remember that this is an entirely for-fun nostalgic roadtrip down memory lane, a chance to have casual games with likeminded people and field armies as they were in 3rd edition. We will forget rules. We will have to dice stuff off. Your Land Raider WILL get one-turned. Please ensure you are attending with an understanding of the spirit of the occasion.
We look forward to doing battle!
